Nature

I'm on the beach with my son, staring at the view of the ocean and the vast greenery behind us. It's humbling to be out here.

That's what us city folk do. We travel out somewhere to get closer to nature. It feels exotic.

There sure are a lot of bugs here. There are in the rooms, along the corridors, on the beach, along the walkway.

Which got me thinking about bugs in the cities.

They must love living somewhere closer to nature and exotic.

We have this sense that we're not part of this world. Anything not built by humans is "nature." Anything built by humans is "man made." But we are part of this world and we are just another species living on this floating rock.

Termites will burrow through trees, essentially destroying them in the process to create homes for their colonies. Ants do the same. So when other animals destroy existing natural formations to create something new for their kind, it's still considered nature.

When we go find a patch of green somewhere, start tearing it apart to build a resort so we can sit on the beach and poop somewhere clean, what are we doing?

Maybe being part of the city folk isn't so removed from nature after all. Entire cities built on greenery versus and ant mound. A swarm of locusts feeding on everything in its path versus tarmac highways carved through forests.

All this makes me want to sing a little song.
